Obesity Begins At Home…

Did you know that long before your child’s first day of kindergarten, most of their lifelong eating habits and food preferences have already been established? It’s a daunting concept, given the fact that many kids today are reared on mac-n-cheese, chicken nuggets and French fries! The juggling-act of parenting leaves us little time to ensure that our children are receiving proper nutrition on a daily basis. In fact, according to government statistics, only about 2% of American children follow the recommended guidelines as represented in The Food Guide Pyramid. Fast food and prepared meals have become part of today’s hurried culture. But this ‘to-go’ lifestyle is catching up with us – more specifically, with our children. With obesity rates continuing to climb among our children, one conclusion can be made: obesity begins at home, and parents and caregivers hold the key to prevention. Prevention Through Intervention…

What can be done to stop or slow the rates of obesity? More specific: What can you do to help protect your child from becoming a statistic? Children’s eating habits and food preferences are influenced as early as pregnancy (yes! In Mom’s belly!), and continue throughout their preschool years. Unfortunately, these formative years of prevention happen to occur during some of the most challenging stages of toddlerhood and preschool – the years notorious for feeding challenges! Many of these challenges derail the efforts of well-intended parents when it comes to keeping their kids on the right track of healthy habit building. But by anticipating these challenges, parents and caregivers can intervene and keep their kids on course. There are several factors that help influence healthy habit building, as well as unhealthy habit formation. Intervention Through Comprehension…

The obesity epidemic in our society is the result of a general unknowingness of how to eat. The truth of the matter is this: we just don’t know enough about nutrition to make truly informed decisions. Children’s unhealthy eating habits are not the deliberate intention of their parents. As a whole, Americans lack a fundamental knowledge in the science of nutrition. This affects our abilities to make informed decisions about the products we purchase and the foods we eat. We pass this unknowingness down to our children who inherit our unhealthy eating habits, and the cycle continues. By becoming informed, we become empowered to make healthy choices to pass along to our children, and in turn – they will pass them on to their children – and so a new cycle begins.
